carmina charm #17

Do you know that our soul is composed of harmony?

- Leonardo DaVinci

It's harmony that your soul and mind embraces again when listening to music. As sound surrounds you, only some melodies firmly resonate with you, get an immediate emotional response - whilst their approach is a smooth and soft one, whilst they slowly, carefully but steadily cling to you, these melodies eventually grab you with an intensity and force that overwhelms, that fully absorbs and stirs. It's these very melodies that are in chime with your mind and soul, it's music that leaves an imprint on your being and mesmerizes ... music that charms

XXXV. Like You Used To

Examining the corpus of songs london based singer/songwriter Ernie Jackson brought to life over the last couple of months, his music's vibrant pulse, its strong(est) sinew comes to light strikingly clear and impressively eye-catching at once: powerful vocals of high quality and distinctive timbre appeal and fascinate on a big scale. Combined with infectiously rhythmic and vivaciously rising melodic swing, it was a matter of time solely until the talented songsmith attracted the attention of BBC Radio 2 and BBC Introducing, both soon enthusiastic about and full of praise for his spirited and peppy music-making

The outcome of Ernie Jackson's recent writing and recording session in LA does unmistakably arouse interest among lovers of rousing and rich pop music, does cause a dynamically sparkling sonic sensation for sure - vibrantly passionate 'Like You Used To' (track 7 of the artist's pinchpunch series) confirms it in a confident and feisty compositional fashion. When electrifying and energetically explosive melodies rise, when vigorous and melodiously raucous vocals excite, the listener knows he is in for yet another bright and atmospheric tonal adventure full of sonorous trumpet groove and catchy drum crescendo, rich in inviting big band moments of days gone by

XXXVI. Paradise Bird

carpe carmina had the pleasure of witnessing Will Robert's charming ways as a performer before when listening to his harmoniously nimble guitar play and warm vocal clarity in the intimate setting of a hamburg-based living room last year. Since then this blog's affection and appreciation for the genuine and briskly mellifluous musicianship of the cambridge troubadour hasn't changed at all - apparently neither has his liking for cozy gig locations and german cities, as above video shows. After releasing an eclectic set of cover songs and performing all over the UK and Europe in spring/summer 2015, Will Robert now sat down (in a hamburg kitchen) and presented a new song of his that floats in a blissfully smooth and emotionally bracing way: Paradise Bird, in which sensitive, soulful vocalism flourishes while atmospherically accompanied by vivifying and alluringly languorous guitar finery. A delightfully imaginative and stirring lyrical tale about taking chances against all odds is told with it - and as the narration unfolds the audience is carried away by Will Robert's dreamfully luminous vocal tone, is enchanted by the song's vivid acoustic ambiencePurely magical this candid and dulcet music moment!
