A hopeful romantic or hopeless realist? – musical personae to capture fleeting wistfulness and fervent warmth

© Unison

It has always been about the story for me. About poetic wordsmithery and prudent linguistic magic. Irrevocably, inexplicably interwoven with pure melodic moments as personal experiences are uncovered bit by bit, tone by tone excelling in brutally beautiful and boldly blessed range. Lyrics so achingly mesmerizing it hurts, so dashingly evocative they capture.

And so it comes with no suprise that one of Ireland's finest and one of Scotland's most promising singer/songwriters kindled my enthusiasm to (finally) share (full-length) what their sincere, sweeping plots unearthed after hours of listening in silent awe and soppy spirit (driving alone at nighttime in my car or embracing the soothing comfort of a hot bath): enticingly pensive and boisterously dulcet musical musings in equal parts.

#1 Parachute

On the one side track there's Nina Nesbitt who discovers her unapologetic true self sits just right with who accepts her for all she is and all she isn’t: a hidden classic, no bold heroine, an enigmatic system of syllables, thoughts and sounds, an authentically evolving 'shapeshifter', an introvert, no flashy showgirl but someone with self-ascribed ‘flaws’ and insecurities that make her lovable and open for love alike given she encounters someone who sees her very soul; and as cordially cathartic and mystically triumphant scenic soundscapes confidently unfold, paired with a velvety raucous, conspiciously emotive voice to disarm and charm simultaneously, the scottish songstress promises to only show herself in all her radiant glory to those who are deserving – for they can see her and accept her for who she really is. What an ode to exploring salubrious self love and finding unconditional love of someone considerate and kind!

Memorable lyrics

'lost my defenses, now I'm defenseless with you enthralling emotional vulnerability at its best (phrasing)

'I'm introverted, it's under the surface, my car's in accelerate, I wanna reverse it, I walk on the stage and I look for the curtain, sometimes I wish I could be a new person [...] but you, not with you.'  letting your guards down with ease, ego and esteem

'If I climb a mountain, I'll never reach the top, 'cause playing the hero is something I'm not.' sweet relevations of softness that endear

'I'm the comic, the bestselling book, flying through free fall and you are the parachute neatly reassuring insights and insiders for romantic introverts

'Bring me the stars, I'll burn like they do, bring me the clouds and I'll be the moon, shining so bright but only for you fancifully devoted vows of a whimsically charismatic lover

#2 Funeral

On the other side track, there's Dermot Kennedy who bears witness to what might be the sore end or a placative, positive new beginning of a relationship as resilience and trust are fading in what could be the uncertain yet looming happy ending expected (one that everyone of us secretly yearns for). And as his relentlessly fiery and vehemently languorous voice crecendoes, channelling constant soulful rawness, the song's hauntingly honest message dawns on the audience with every harmoniously hymnic and rhythmically sonorous instrumental cobblestone on this (4-minutes-)long path of painful redemption and sanguine reappraisal: if you put in the work, if you don't give up that easily, there always is a way to make it through (together), stronger and more assured than before, as a dyad in the making once more, as individuals broken, however, 'rebuilt' seeing eye to eye.

Memorable lyrics:

'not even poetry can fix this, right now we both need more than words' but yet feliciously dauntless words of promise are uttered and fix our yearning for tearful poignancy and elegant verse

'We set a fire to our sorrow and watch the hurt go up in flames' a purifying and rapturous recommencement pronounced

'Grief is such a solid promise, joy just leaves you in the rain, sadness waits down in the lobby, solace stood you up again. I'm thankful for the darkeness, everything it let's me see [...]' embracing dark times with prosaic grace and composed dreamer's grit

'If I'm honest you're the reason that the light gets in at all, you're the song that breaks the silence, you're the smile at curtain call. I'm scared of who I'd be without you, much more than you know [...]' the enviably unwavering belief in someone to wholeheartedly and wholesomely complete and accompany you for the long run

And isn't it a nice comforting thought that when Parachute's persona enters the stage, feeling timid and uneasy while looking for the curtain, Funeral's persona got her covered pointing out that there will be someone catching her eye smiling brightly welcoming when the curtain drops? So breathe in, breathe out ... and enjoy the show that is life with all its tribulations and wonders. You're not alone in this. You don't have to be. Someone's song will stop the silence for you, too
