carmina charm #28

Do you know that our soul is composed of harmony?

- Leonardo DaVinci

It's harmony that your soul and mind embraces again when listening to music. As sound surrounds you, only some melodies firmly resonate with you, get an immediate emotional response - whilst their approach is a smooth and soft one, whilst they slowly, carefully but steadily cling to you, these melodies eventually grab you with an intensity and force that overwhelms, that fully absorbs and stirs. It's these very melodies that are in chime with your mind and soul, it's music that leaves an imprint on your being and mesmerizes ... music that charms

LVIII.  Say Goodbye

Brimful of energy, infectious hooks and thrilling tempo 'Say Goodbye' welcomes its listeners with powerfully upbeat tonal spirit, one that is greatly enhanced through bright, buoyant storytelling and Stolarz' charmingly nonchalant vocal verve. Built on keen momentum and dashing rhythms, the spirited, riff-laden number utters a broody narration that reckons with growing indifference and guilt in a relationship, doomed by lack of devotion and resonance, thus playfully arranges peppy instrumental drive and moody lyrical reflections side by side. And it's exactly this intimate liaison between catchy melodics and clever narrative that makes the closing track of the Active Set's latest EP such a glowing triumph, celebrated and mastered convincingly well by the LA-trio many times before ('Watch Yr Back', 'Famous For Dying',  'Best Summer Ever' et cetera).

LVIX. There's A Wolf

Folk-esque fairytales are intertwined with absorbing alternative flair - alt-folk outfit Silences certainly know how to spin spellbinding  sonic stories; with their compositionally haunting single 'There's A Wolf' the charming quintet does not only evoke a mystic, serene musical aura the audience can't elude but also blends it with moony, mesmeric fantasia easy to fall for. In it, silky vocalism and rhythmically surging, smoothly streaming melodies serve as dreamy but suspenseful prelude for the sonorously soaring and thrillingly swirling instrumental finish to come. It's one that takes the listener by (pleasant) surprise and enthralls him all the more as erratically multi-layered and hypnotically staggering melodic momentum - for a fleeting and yet irresistibly intense melodic moment - raises the prior blissful tonal veil in a harmoniously striking fashion. This truly is shimmering musical magic

LX. Inches Apart

When NYC artist Jenni Magana sings about love, the longing and misery, the intensity and (fatal) appeal, in a style that is poignantly pure and her own, you believe every word whispered and vocalized, wholeheartedly captivated and compassionate until she falls silent again; what leaves you yearning for more of it, more sieging heartache and honesty to surrender to. 'Inches Apart' has such effect on its audience: Magana's delicate voice stirs you up and comforts you all the same, whilst aerial, gracefully apollonian electric guitar play grants ethereal, melodiously mild soundscapes time to thrive and to summon wistful euphony. It's a beautifully bare and genuine composition in total, one that moves to tears (it did here), and if it doesn't, it will at least  linger in your memory for its fine and elegant sound

LXI.  Godsend

With a song so divine and dulcet in sound, listeners might be fooled to believe Robbie Cavanagh's recently released single 'Godsend' has been a gift from above indeed. Rich in celestial harmonies and compelling melodies, it has been carefully crafted by the manchester-based muso who poured out his heart and soul in it - and this shows satisfyingly well. Gripping instrumental sonority flirts with alluringly brisk melodic flow, a vigorous, atmospherically echoing rhythm section clings to its emotionally yearning string section accompaniment, all led by Robbie's clear vocals, tender in tone and ardent in phrasing, and lyrically complemented with a beautifully emotive narration to match. Mesmerizing and mellifluous, his music sure strikes a chord with all the lovers of stirring sentiment and full-scale tonal feel out there.
