-With acoustic music, there is nowhere to hide: equipped with your voice and instrument only, you gotta charm with attitude, charisma, soul. -
It's with honesty and passion that singer/songwriter Cal Ruddy creates art that reflects his experiences in life, his perception of time passing by and the changes as well as challenges it brings - it's something most listeners can easily relate to, and maybe that's why the songsmith's stirring narrations resonate with many in such an effortless way; a year ago exactly the liverpool based artist launched his debut EP 'How To Rewind Life' (carpe carmina talked about this and Cal Ruddy's approach to music-making ahead of the EP release back then: read the interview here) and captured his outlook on life under the rule of time with it: cordial lyrics are aurally complemented by emotionally raw, ardent vocals and melodiously brisk, at times movingly melancholic acoustic arrangements.
The artist's favourite on compositional first-born 'How To Rewind Life' is the heartfelt 'Confession', for its atmospheric acoustic sentiment has a charm on its own. And in all honesty, the song is the most powerful one on the 4-track-compilation - not in instrumental dynamics or energy but in writing and vocal expressivity. 'With The Time' showcases a sensitive warmth in the musician's voice all the same yet delivers more instrumental drive than 'Confession', while 'She Is The One' brings passionate melodies into focus and rhythmic tune 'Limbo' shows Ruddy's bolder side as a singer. Embracing a relatable theme, pairing pensive lyrics and vibrant guitar play, the acoustic foursome embodies what the 21 year old muso is made of - authentic and emotional songwriting, enhanced by keen vocal charisma, shows satisfyingly -, moreover manages to win its audience over with an unaltered, dynamic musical style.

'These are my stories and I tell them to you' - prior to her debut EP 'Camden' (due to be released on April 29, with a gig at Manchester Academy 3 to accompany one of Jess Kemp's defining moments as a musician) being sent out to bring rhythmically vivifying and perky, emotionally radiant and blithe music home to its listeners, carpe carmina was lucky enough to witness - even though just in recorded version and not live (yet) - the blissful melodic momentum and charming narrational spirit of the genuine songstress. What struck a chord with yours truly and will most certainly with her manchester (and beyond) audience as well, is the singer/songwriter's warm and bright vocal clarity, already noticeable when indulging in first single 'Stars', which features as (charmingly catchy) closing track on 'Camden' (EP). Joined by the infectious and confident tonal vibe of 'Killer Shoes', the shiny harmonies and dulcet melodic vitality of 'Stay' and the spirited musical pulse title track 'Camden' calls its own, stories about falling in love, pursuing one's dreams and standing up for one's views are told in an honest, endearing fashion and are raised in a powerfully melodious diction. Acoustic pop at it's finest - rich in soul, verve and sparkling sonic flair. More of this, please!
